Deuteronomy 5:16 says, “Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.”

Honor means heavy, respect or regard in which one is held by others.

Prolong means extended – so that means you would have lived an amount of time but because you did what God told you, you’re going to live longer and have a good, prosperous life.

A failure to honor father and mother is a failure to honor God.

It’s not about mama and daddy, the big thing is it’s about you honoring God – by honoring the place He gave them and the choice He made. We honor not because of them but because of Him. That’s what keeps you straight, keeps you right.

We’re respecting God and His choice for the place of your father and mother. We honor what He honors.

Obeying God’s Word to honor your father and mother is giving you a long abundant life.
