Luke 10:38-42 says, Jesus and His disciples entered a village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” 41 Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
The things that distract Christians from God’s Word may seem important or urgent. We can see this with Martha and Mary.
Mary was listening to Jesus teach while Martha was busy, feeling responsible, cooking for everyone. Martha couldn’t take it any longer and went to Jesus, interrupted His teaching, and said, “Don’t You care my sister has left me to do all the work? Tell her to help me.”
Jesus said I’m not taking from her the good thing she has chosen.
Mary chose to set everything aside so she could hear the Word. Martha allowed herself to be caught up in the circumstances. She thought she was doing the right thing but Jesus said only one thing is needed. Being full of the Word was more important than her service.
The Word of God should always come first in our life. It’s what is needed.
